Portrait of an Artist : REE NAKADA

Posted By Nico / June, 16, 2017 / 0 comments

Illustrator and good friend Ree Nakada recently came to visit after her trip to Japan. Showing her the new home studio we came to a quick impromptu decision to produce a series of images which reflect the inner workings of the petite artist.
The photographs explore themes of mental health and body image. Exposing struggles which Ree herself has personally faced, to find freedom in artistic expression.

Ree produces her work under another monika ‘Melancholy Mandy” which you can check out online and her artwork at Little Tengu Preston, Melbourne VIC.

Portrait of an artist, Bruce Wiggan, Broome 2011.

Whilst walking around town on a lunch break I saw this lovely man leaning against the balcony by the shops.
I stopped and asked to take his portrait, and asked his name, not knowing who he was, and he told me a little bit about himself. He is an artist and was affiliated with the Short St Gallery.

I later discovered more information about him and found that he is a senior Bardi man from the coastal Kimberley community of One Arm Point. Brice Wiggan is a renowned carver, carving beautiful aboriginal art into pearl shells and has works in many collections including the collection of Mr Kerry Stokes.

You can view some examples of his work on the Short St Gallery website here by clicking the link:

Portrait of an Artist: ARRAN HEARN : D-TRIANGLE

Arran Hearn is a friend of mine and this photo in particular is one of my favourite portraits, taken at a party with the laser lights spinning around us, but somehow, by chance, the lights lined up just right on Arran’s hand. He is a big fan of triangles! When he saw the pic he couldn’t believe how well it turned out and I remember him running around showing people! So this photo always makes me smile.

Arran is a Graphic Designer, a DJ and a master of Lego. He creates custom LEGO sets of musical equipment pertaining to DJs, in particular Technics turntables and all kinds of samplers. Check his cool work out here on his personal website http://numode.net/
